31 Mission start

Stink dared not sleep. Whether it is due to fear of the Colonel’s return or anticipation of Techkies’ arrival, he knew not. His torture treatment by the Magis had disillusioned him. As a Magi, he did not think much of the innuendos against the Techkies. He was disgusted by how the Magi soldiers mistreated FP-1a, but he had not spoken then. Now that his status was reversed, Stink could feel the bitter irony creeping onto him.

I swear I will treat both Magis and Techkies equally in the future, he mused.

He was still chained up in the undecorated room of cold white walls, but his morale was soaring. The paralysis in his limbs now makes him desire for something to happen. Time seemed to pass slower here, his irrational voice spoke. No, it must have been mere hours, his rational side countered.

I must be going bonkers.

Suddenly, his body started to swing violently like a pendulum, chaffing his limbs further. This must be the part where I start to hallucinate, Stink thought numbly as he heard buzzing noise in the background.

“No, it is the signal!” Stink sobered up from the jarring alarms. The alarms were reminiscent of the ones he last heard in the Space Base, which sent spurts of adrenaline into his body.

Remembering Schwann’s words, he twisted his left hand and pointed his forefinger at the right chain. “I can do this. Just focus,” he prep-talked to himself.

To his confidence.

He imagined the chain breaking on itself, but nothing happened. He tried again – repeatedly but to no avail. Schwann is mistaken about me and I am doomed here, he thought.

Imagine your finger as an extension of the wand. the memory of Schwann told Stink.

“Stupid, I am doing the basic theory wrong.”

Focusing and mustering the surrounding Magictron particles in the room, he directed them like a wave towards the chain. Transfer the energy into the atoms and compounds in the chain and agitate them to turn into a liquid state, he recited.

With a soft click, his right hand slid off from the chain instantly, like a puppet being released from its strings. I did it, he thought hysterically. He quickly released himself from the bounds and rubbed his bleeding wrists. Tracing a line over his wounds with his forefinger, the bleeding stopped, and a crust formed over the wounds.

Not bad after all. It is time to run.

Stink attempted to lurch forward, and his knees instantly buckled under his weight. Massaging his deadened feet, he slowly rose again and blasted the door open with a point of his finger. To his relief, there were no guards.

Three doors to the right, he thought as he ran like a drunkard across the corridor. The floor seemed to be shaking too violently to be a result of a concussion.

The Orbital Base was under attack!

A distant boom caused the lights to go off and Stink floated off the ground instantly. The gravity systems must be down. Stink willed himself to float down the corridor, using the emergency lamps to illuminate up his path.
